Description:
Under the direction of the HIM Director, the Coder is responsible for coding and abstracting all inpatient and outpatient accounts utilizing an encoder and the Hospital EHR.
Essential Functions:
+ Codes outpatient accounts using ICD-10, ICD-9, CPT, and HCPCS classification systems following AHA _Coding Clinic_ and Hospital guidelines.
+ Codes inpatient accounts AHA _Coding Clinic_ and Hospital guidelines using ICD-10 and ICD-9 classification systems.
+ Maintains a follow-up system of physician queries for Outpatient and Inpatient accounts to facilitate AR goals
+ Works with the Business Office to resolve coding/billing related issues.
Other Functions:
+ Communicates with medical staff to promote quality documentation and coding.
+ Answer departmental phone calls in a professional, courteous and efficient manner. Demonstrates the ability to respond and react in a professional manner when communicating with co-workers, visitors, and other business associates. Maintains confidentiality of all the hospital, physician, patient-related business information.
+ Other duties as assigned.
Experience:
One (1) to two (2) years of previous coding experience in a hospital Medical Records/Health Information Management (HIM) Department.
Education & Training:
College level Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology and Clinicopathology required.
Course work in ICD-9, ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS required.
Licensure, Certification, Registration & Evaluation:
RHIT and CCS preferred.
Other Requirements:
Previous experience with Encoder Software preferred.
Computer experience required.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
